Environmentally Unstable
Earlier this week, I went along to an environmental meeting organised by the David Suzuki Foundation at the Vogue Theatre in downtown Vancouver. The topic of the evening was "Oil Drilling Off the BC Coast", or rather, "How Oil Drilling Off the BC Coast Would Be The Worst Idea Ever and Kill Lots of Whales". It was an interesting time, although it did set my mind to spinning, wondering whether I should be moving to Nimbin and living in a hessian sack, or trying to make as much money as I can selling porn and landmines before human civilization folds up like a paper cup and plunges into the sea. Dr Suzuki was an excellent speaker, with plenty of good ideas, humour and a practiced, engaging style, but somehow I felt more confused and conflicted after the evening's discussion than before it. I might just need to smoke more weed.
In other news, I took a bus to the US/Canadian border this week, and activated my working holiday visa. It was a fairly painless process in the end, with no lineups, awkward questions or cavity searches. Now all I have to do is find a job, and start pushing back the tides of debt. I'm not exactly filled with blazing hope as to the IT job situation in Vancouver, but I should at least give it a try before I apply for a position at Starbucks or McDonalds. I suspect it would be only a matter of minutes before I went all Fight Club on the food, and that's not good for anyone.
